Matt Kile, ex-cop and ex-con, current smart-aleck, and a neighbor of Mr. and Mrs. Talmadge has built himself a comfortable career writing mysteries. Garson Talmadge sold weapons to Saddam Hussein, then moved out of France, came to America and married Clarice, a woman half his age. When Clarice is arrested for murdering her husband, Matt becomes the investigator for her defense attorney, and quickly learns there is a line of suspects stretching from the U.S. into Europe and the Middle East.
Not long after getting involved in the case Matt learns that Garson Talmadge’s weapons deals meant the FBI had an interest as well as the French Prefecture of Police. While Matt is simply trying to establish that Clarice is innocent, the FBI is trying to learn how Hussein got some of his weaponry, and powerful members of the French government and armaments industry wants to keep Matt from following the trail far enough to expose them.
Told in the first person, Matt shares his thoughts and wise remarks as he weaves his way through a mass of plot twists and turns to its conclusion, and learns Who Murdered Garson Talmadge.

The writing is solid, and the story seemed to be fairly well put together. But I got about a third of the way through it and decided to stop. One thing that bothered me was that there were quite a few errors--missing words, wrong words, incorrect or missing punctuation. Since I'm a professional proofreader, this probably bothered me more than most. But what really made me put it down was the constant sexual references to women. This guy never met a woman he didn't want to ogle, leer at, and hopefully have sex with, including his partner's wife. I don't think he had a conversation with any woman that didn't include a bunch of sexual innuendos. I'm surprised he had any brain left to think about the case. At any rate, I didn't get the feeling it was going to get any better, so I put it down and went on to something with a little less teenage randiness.Product details

Who Murdered Garson Talmadge A Matt Kile Mystery Book 1 edition by David Bishop Paradox Book CoversFormatting Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
A study in characters with flaws, "Who Murdered Garson Talmadge," entertains while it requires the reader to suspend disbelief. The flaws trip the characters regularly, as they are supposed to do, both in fiction and in life. Sometimes the author allows a character to slip out of his assigned role, with dialogue that doesn't suit. I'd skip that, if I were you, Mr. Bishop, as it adds nothing but corniness to the story. Let the characters speak in their own consistent voices. And don't over-explain situations or conclusions in exposition, nor repeat too much. Let the reader draw the "moral of the story" for herself.
Strengths of this writing include interesting subject matter, such as a non-traditional family, composed of children saved from death in Iraq, then brought up by a French stepmother. The arms deals were another facet which intrigued me. These subjects could have been played up more. While character Matt Kile was in Paris, I wondered if the name Garson could have been a play on the French word for boy or waiter-garçon-but no such suggestion materialized in the writing. A reader can delight in the romps of Matt Kile with female characters, while appreciating his ability to maintain analytical acuity. The denouement is satisfyingly reserved till nearly the end. As the first in a series, this tale can stand alone. One hopes for even more development of the principal characters as the series progresses.
I just finished this book and then read some of the reviews on it. I have to say I'm dumbfounded by them. Some have claimed the book is slow, and one called it sexist. One said it couldn't match Chandler. Seriously? I strongly disagree on all counts. David Bishop is a master at plotting, and his characterizations are fully developed, accurate personalities that are presented without unnecessarily belaboring the issue. The book moves along quickly, along a logical course, but develops some unexpected twists near the end. I enjoyed it thoroughly and quite frankly feel that Bishop is one of the best in the business today. If he keeps on writing this way, I fully expect to see his name among the writers topping the mystery lists for a very long time.
I have come to expect the unexpected in a Bishop mystery and this tale certainly didn't disappoint. Matthew Kile is a selectively philandering PI who writes mysteries after an abruptly ended career as a top Long Beach detective that ends up in jail for murder. He prefers to stick to his writing but is unable to say no to a challenging investigation which he definitely gets with the Talmadge case.
Matt was lucky enough to get a pardon due to the unique circumstances of the murder and the support of the one remaining family member that survived the mass slaughter by the man Matt murdered.
His involvement in the investigation of the Talmadge murder has made him a "person of interest" and takes him on a circuitous route that includes the FBI and the Paris police. Never a dull moment. I loved this witty, sexy and sometimes funny route to solving a murder with many possible suspects! A good read for sure.
I had read one of his other books- The Woman- enjoyed that one. This one was a chore to read. Two stars may be generous. If you like Jim Carrey movies you may like this book. Written for adolescent type humor. One cliche after another, nothing original. I will not be reading any more of his books after the one.
Excellent dialogue.
Easy to follow stand-alone. No editing errors, graphic violence or drag-you-down drama.
Compelling storyline with a surprise ending. Realistic procedures, actions and reactions. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking and humorous dialogue.
“Someday,” Fidge said, “I need to give you my sex-without-deep-feelings-is-worthless speech. I just don’t have time right now.”
“Oh, too bad, I’ve been so looking forward to that one. But it’s a load of bull. Sex for pure lust is not worthless. Not all of us are fortunate enough to have someone we love deeply in our lives every time we get a case of the galloping hornies.”
“The divorcing kind. She’d move on and find a new rich guy. Think of it as legal prostitution with fewer customers and better working conditions, with a topnotch severance package as a bonus.”
"... Last Sunday I asked God why he let hormones grow up ahead of brains. How do we get these youngsters to understand the only really important thing about high school is graduating? That the rest they think is so important won’t mean squat in the big picture of their lives?”
'Of course, I admit that money is something about which one can be more principled after they have an adequate supply.'
Dick Fisher is an OB-GYN; which tells me Dick was smarter than his brother, Brad, who, as a criminal lawyer, spends his days dealing with a@@holes.
No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.
